Dog Walker or Dog Daycare? How to Choose in Philadelphia
The short answer: a midday dog walker suits dogs who are happy to rest at home and need a break, some exercise and a bathroom trip in the middle of the day. Daycare suits young, very social dogs who need more activity than a walk gives and enjoy a group all day. Plenty of Center City owners use both.
How each one works
A dog walker comes to your home, takes your dog out one-on-one for 20, 30 or 60 minutes, and brings them back to rest. With us, you get photos, notes and the GPS route after every walk.
Daycare means dropping your dog off in the morning and picking them up in the evening. In between, they spend the day at the facility with other dogs and staff, usually with play time and rest periods.
When a walker is the better fit
Your dog sleeps most of the day while you're out and just needs a midday break.
Your dog is older, has joint or health issues, or tires easily.
Your dog is reactive, nervous around other dogs, or doesn't enjoy big groups. A one-on-one walk avoids that.
You have a puppy who needs potty breaks and short, calm outings, or who isn't old enough or fully vaccinated for daycare yet.
Drop-off and pickup don't fit your commute. A walker comes to you, and you set up keys or a lockbox once.
When daycare is the better fit
Your dog is young, high-energy and loves other dogs, and a walk doesn't tire them out.
You're away 10 hours or more most days.
Your dog struggles with long stretches home alone.
Most daycares ask for current vaccines, including bordetella, and an evaluation day before your dog can join, and many require spaying or neutering past a certain age. A dog who doesn't pass the evaluation, or who comes home wired and overtired, is often happier with a walker.
What each costs
Our 30-minute weekday walks cost $22 to $26 each on a regular weekly schedule. Those are our rates as of October 2026; the Prices page always has the current ones. For daycare, Rover's 2025 price survey puts a full day in Philadelphia at $32 to $50, with about $43 typical.
A 30-minute walk every weekday: $110 a week with us
Daycare every weekday at about $43 a day: about $215 a week
Three 30-minute walks a week: $72. Three days of daycare: about $130
Daycare covers more of the day, so it isn't a like-for-like comparison. But if your dog would rather nap than play all day, a walk costs about half as much. Our guide to what a dog walker costs in Philadelphia has more weekly examples.
Using both
A common setup is daycare one or two days a week for play, and a walk on the other days. Walks follow a weekly schedule you choose, so it's easy to book only the days your dog isn't at daycare. New accounts usually start at two walks a week.
