A Guide To Dog Parks In Philadelphia

Schuylkill River Dog Park

Philadelphia has some amazing dog parks. In our first blog post, Pups On Passyunk put together this guide to Philly dog parks. Whether you are new to the city or have changed neighborhoods, here you can find parks in your area and ways to get involved to help support them. Most of these parks rely on the support (both financial and volunteer efforts) of the community members that use them. We have included links to the organizations that help maintain the parks and encourage you to learn more and get involved.

CENTER CITY

Pepper at Seger Dog Park

This is Pepper’s favorite neighborhood spot. It is well maintained, has cool mulch that is easy on her paws, and always has a great group of dogs.

The park has committed volunteers that care for and maintain it, regularly refreshing the mulch, cleaning, raking, and keeping it looking great. It can get pretty busy during evenings and weekends.

Schuylkill River Dog Park, Fitler Square/Rittenhouse

25th and Spruce

Maintained by the Friends of Schuylkill River Park, the dog park at the Schuylkill River Park is one of the best in the city. They have a great artificial turf that is friendly on dogs’ paws and is easy to keep clean. Others become dusty, muddy, and messy, and this park is great in all conditions. There is a lot of room to run and play.

I-95 Park Dog Run, Old City/Penn’s Landing

Front and Chestnut

This small park is maintained by Parks and Rec, and it is a regular spot for many Society Hill and Old City residents. We have always met amazing dogs there, and we think you’ll love it.

Dog Park in Queen Village

Situated mid-block between Catherine and Queen Streets between 2nd and 3rd Streets.

Queen Village K9 is a social group of pet owners promoting responsible pet ownership, outreach, and dog run maintenance in the Queen Village neighborhood of Philadelphia, including the Mario Lanza Dog Run.

Penn’s Landing Dog Park

1 N Delaware Ave

Penn’s Landing Dog Park opened a few years ago. Near the Residences at Dockside, a pet friendly building. This new fenced-in park for pups is located between Delaware Avenue and the river at Market Street, and features a grove of mature trees, benches for the humans, great views of the river, and a water station for the dogs.

To The South (South Philly, Passyunk, Pennsport, and more)

Columbus Square Dog Park

NW Intersection of 12th and Reed

Maintained by the South Philadelphia Association of Dog Owners (SPADO), the dog park at Columbus Square is a great dog park near East Passyunk. While for years there has been talk of upcoming renovations, it appears those renovations are finally about to get under way. We are really excited to see the new park!

BOK Dog Run

Corner of 9th Street and Dudley StreetA small park, but convenient for many. It often gets busy with neighbors who live in the area, and for good reason. The other facilities in BOK are well known, including their amazing rooftop view of the city, and the new restaurant on the South side.

Efforts to bring a park to Point Breeze

Clark Park Dog Bowl, University City

43rd & Chester

Clark Park does not have an actual dog park. However, it is not uncommon to find dogs and their owners gathered in the large “bowl” section of the park. Be mindful that city leash laws require that dogs be kept on leashes, and that it is not enclosed with a fence. And this space is often used for plays, movies, music, and more, so please be sure to pick up after your pet.

This is a private, membership based dog park with extensive rules and regulations regarding membership and usage. They aim to keep the park in great condition and act as a respectful neighbor. Green Street Dog Park provides dogs and dog lovers with a safe, secure, quiet, attractive off-leash dog park and green space for socialization and exercise. See their site for membership details.

Palmer Doggie Depot, Fishtown

Palmer Doggie Depot (PDD) is a Fishtown community dog park and a free neighborhood amenity for all dogs and their owners. The dog park was built by New Kensington Community Development Corporation as a part of a larger project to make improvements to the Shissler Recreation Center.

Orriana Hill Dog Park, Fishtown

Know simply as “The Dog Park” around the neighborhood, Orianna Hill Park is an L-shaped dog park. Oriana Hill Dog Park is a private park and requires all dogs that use the park to be registered with the park. Visit their site to learn more or register your dog.

Monk’s Dog Run, Port Richmond

Born of community efforts that converted an abandoned lot to the dog run, this park has strong local support and an active community. It’s been a great addition to the neighborhood, and there seem to be plans to keep improving and adding features.

To The East (NJ)

Timber Creek Park, Blackwood NJ

Feeling that we needed to include something to the East, this park deserves mentioning too and is definitely worth a trip out of the city. A large, wooded Dog Park with 9 acres fenced in, giving plenty of space for your dog to run and play. The entire park is over 100 acres and worth exploring while you’re there.

Unofficial Dog Play Zones

There are many in the city, and as you spend time walking around with your dog, you will start to get a feel for where and when certain areas become unofficial dog play zones. We aren’t going to call them out here since they operate under the radar, but we certainly enjoy them!
